One player won’t lead the team to the World Series and won’t win it.
The loss of Shields was offset by the progress of Jordano Ventura and the signing of three skilled players at once: Edinson Volquez, Crais Young and the still-great Johnnie Cueto. Each of them played at least one game in the playoffs without a run. And that is the minimum for a team going straight to the top.
Strong performance by the players, solid defense and the determination of the hitters.
